Retro Classic ~ Vintage HOB

By Louise D. and Sheila T.

Catherine Regehr

This Retro Classic tuxedo collar silk gown is a beauty. Catherine is a local Vancouver designer who was born in the Yukon, studied in Paris, worked in design houses in New York and has returned to work in Vancouver.  She uses “the culture of beauty” to self-describe her designs. Catherine’s summers are spent at her home in Northern BC, which has inspired her to also incorporate First Nations elements into her designs.

Karl Lagerfeld

German fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, is known for his “bold designs and constant reinvention”. He has been described in Vogue magazine as the “unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment.” He has also had an appreciation for the past, often frequenting flea markets for old dresses to deconstruct and reimagine.

We believe the above vintage Karl wool suit to be from the mid 1980s, about the time Karl was starting his new brand built around the concept he described as “intellectual sexiness.”  With or without a little creative deconstruction and reimagining, this quality piece is ready to take on a new incarnation, 2nd time around (check Instagram for further description).

Escada Margaretha Ley

This black wool jacket is an exquisitely tailored, classic 1980s ESCADA with signature “gold” buttons, zippered pockets and satin side inserts and sleeves.

The luxury brand ESCADA was founded in 1978 by Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley in Munich, Germany. For one of their early collections, the designers arranged a photo shoot at a local racetrack. They were so taken by an Irish horse named Escada that they decided to name their company after him. Margareth’s clients were working women who appreciated bold, sophisticated designs. You might remember seeing Diana, Princess of Wales, wearing a yellow and black plaid ESCADA coat on an official visit to Berlin.

Vintage items donated to us aren’t always designer labels. This “Made in England” fox fur trimmed wool coat is hand made or tailor made. It hails from an era when women often bought quality fabrics and had outfits custom made.

The faux fur trimmed red wool coat is 1980s Edward Chapman. The two Vancouver fashion houses that share the Edward Chapman name and brand have been a family  business since 1890. The men’s store locations have closed in recent years but the rebranded Edward Chapman Women stores remain; South Granville, West Vancouver and Surrey.

The HOB’s Social Media team has been working on ways to better identify FEATURED and VINTAGE items in the store. We will be introducing these hang tags 🏷 over the next few weeks. Look for them next time you’re in.
